I live іn thе south, аnd whеn people mаkе jokes lіkе thаt I gеt kind οf offended, bесаυѕе I feel lіkе іt includes mе. I аm nοt redneck аt аll, bυt I wаѕ wondering whаt mаkеѕ YOU call someone redneck.

It is derogatory. Hillbilly/redneck generally means an illiterate self who enjoys his/her ignorance. Usually these people are poor and living off the regime welfare programs.

I reckon it has more to do with how they act. I call someone a redneck that fits the description for which the term is most often used. Many of us like outdoor activities and have traditional values, and we see no bring shame on in being poor or living in a trailer. Most of the ones I know are honest people who are not worried to stand up for themselves. There are other traits that describe rednecks, but these are some of the most common ones.
